The keeping of animals in the Murweh Shire Council region is governed by the Animal Management (Cats and Dogs) Act 2008 and Council’s local laws.

It is compulsory for dogs to be:

  • Registered with Council, from twelve (12) weeks of age.
  • Microchipped, before twelve (12) weeks of age.
  • Registered with Council within 14 days of keeping the dog.
  • Registered at their ‘kept at address’.

Changes in dog registration

In accordance with section 54(3) of the Act, it is an offence not to update your registration details with Council within 7 days of the change. This includes:

  • Change to the 'kept at' address.
  • Change to your personal details (phone, mailing address, email).
  • If your animal has been recently de-sexed.
  • If your animal has recently been microchipped.
  • If you are relocating or giving your animal away.
  • The death of your registered animal.
